Six days is a limited amount of time for a route that connects northern Morocco, the imperial cities and the Sahara. We therefore designed this itinerary around a clear sequence rather than simply adding as many destinations as possible.
The tour does include one long driving day, but every major transition serves a purpose. Travelers begin with the calmer atmosphere of Chefchaouen, experience the changing landscapes between Fes and Merzouga, recover during a night in the desert and finish in Marrakech without unnecessary backtracking.
Chefchaouen adds distance to a short itinerary, but we believe it deserves its place because it offers something completely different from Casablanca, Fes and Marrakech.
After an international flight, many travelers need time to adjust to Morocco, recover from jet lag and settle into the rhythm of the trip. Chefchaouen provides a gentler introduction. Its compact medina, quiet lanes, mountain air and relaxed cafés allow visitors to explore without immediately facing the size and intensity of a major city.
Our team members are experienced travelers themselves, so we understand that the beginning of a trip should not feel like a race. Once guests arrive in Chefchaouen, they can slow down, rest and enjoy the town at their own pace before continuing toward the busier medina of Fes.
Including Chefchaouen is therefore not simply about adding another famous destination. It creates a calmer beginning and gives the route better emotional balance.
Fes to Merzouga is the longest driving day of this itinerary. We prefer to explain that clearly instead of presenting it as a short or effortless transfer.
It is a full travel day, but it is also one of the most visually varied drives in Morocco. The surroundings change so frequently that the journey feels like several different regions joined together.
“My name is Houssain, and I am one of Imagine Morocco’s expert guides. This is one of my favorite routes because the landscape never stays the same for long. We leave the historic medina of Fes, cross the modern city and, in less than an hour, begin climbing into the Middle Atlas Mountains.”
The first important stop is normally Ifrane. With its red-roofed buildings, parks and cooler mountain climate, the town feels very different from the traditional architecture of Fes. We usually allow around 20–30 minutes for a drink, a short walk and a photograph beside the well-known stone lion sculpture.
During winter, Ifrane may be covered in snow. The town is also associated with Morocco’s coldest mountain weather: a temperature of 23.9°C was recorded there in 1935, widely recognized as the lowest recorded temperature in Africa.
From Ifrane, the road continues through cedar, pine and oak landscapes toward the forests near Azrou. When Barbary macaques are present, we may stop for approximately 20–30 minutes to observe them from a respectful distance.
Imagine Morocco does not encourage guests to feed the macaques. Feeding wildlife can alter natural behavior, create dependence on visitors and sometimes lead to aggressive encounters. Seeing the animals without interfering with them is safer for travelers and better for the forest.
The scenery then opens around Boulaajoul, where we can make a brief 10–15-minute comfort stop to use the bathroom and stretch our legs. We continue toward Midelt, positioned between the Middle Atlas and the eastern High Atlas landscapes.
Beyond Midelt, the journey follows the Tizi n’Talghomt corridor and passes through the Zaabal Tunnel toward the Drâa-Tafilalet region. Depending on our timing and the dietary requirements of our guests, lunch is normally arranged in Er-Rich or Errachidia, with approximately 45–60 minutes to eat and rest.
After lunch, the landscape changes again. Rocky mountain scenery gives way to the long green ribbon of the Ziz Valley, where date palms grow between dry slopes and traditional settlements. We stop at a panoramic viewpoint for around 15–20 minutes, although this can be adjusted when guests want more time for photographs.
The final section passes mud-brick villages and increasingly arid terrain before reaching Erfoud—the last major town before Merzouga and the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi.

For travelers who prefer shorter days, the journey can be divided with an overnight stay in Midelt or Boulaajoul. The trade-off is that an extra night here leaves one less day for Chefchaouen, the Sahara, Marrakech or another preferred destination. On the standard six-day route, we keep the journey as one day so that time can be spent where the experience is more rewarding.
Finishing in Marrakech prevents unnecessary backtracking. After traveling from the north through Fes, Merzouga, the Dades Valley and the High Atlas Mountains, Marrakech is the natural endpoint of the route.
Returning immediately to Casablanca would add several more hours of driving without introducing a new landscape or experience. Ending in Marrakech gives travelers more time to explore and also works well for those departing from Marrakech Menara Airport.
The route remains flexible. Guests who need to finish in Casablanca can do so, but on a six-day itinerary this may require shortening or removing the Marrakech sightseeing tour. We explain that trade-off before confirming the itinerary so travelers can decide which experience matters more to them.
The desert is placed after the Fes-to-Merzouga journey intentionally. It transforms the end of a long travel day into one of the most memorable parts of the tour.
Instead of arriving at another ordinary hotel, guests leave the vehicle behind and travel toward the camp by camel or 4×4. Dinner is followed by traditional music and drumming, but the evening does not have to remain busy. Travelers can step away from the camp, watch the stars or simply enjoy the unusual quiet of the Sahara.
That change of pace helps the long drive fade quickly. The following morning begins among the dunes rather than on another city street.
Before booking, we ask travelers what they are most interested in. Some guests would rather spend two nights in the desert and less time in busy Marrakech. In that case, we can add another desert night and shorten the Marrakech program, or extend the complete tour when the schedule allows.
The desert should not feel like a box that has been checked. For travelers who value silence, open landscapes and local desert experiences, it can become the central part of the journey.
