Complete 9-Day Fes to Marrakech Desert Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at Fes Airport and Transfer to Your Riad

Welcome to Morocco. Upon arrival at Fes–Saïss Airport, your Imagine Morocco driver will meet you and transfer you to your hotel or riad in Fes. Depending on your arrival time, you can relax at your accommodation or take a short independent walk around the nearby streets.

This easy arrival day gives you time to rest after your flight and prepare for the journey ahead. Your complete guided exploration of Fes will begin the following morning.

Approximate distance: 15–20 kilometres
Estimated driving time: Around 30 minutes
Overnight: Fez
Meals: According to your confirmed package

Day 2: Guided Sightseeing Tour of Fes

After breakfast, meet your local guide and begin exploring Fes, one of Morocco’s most important historic cities. Walk through Fes el-Bali, visit traditional workshops and discover the narrow streets, food markets and artisan quarters of the old medina.

Depending on opening hours, the tour may include Bou Inania Madrasa, Nejjarine Square, the famous tanneries and a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the medina. Return to your riad in the afternoon or continue exploring independently.

Approximate distance: Local sightseeing
Overnight: Fes
Meals: Breakfast

Day 3: Fes – Ifrane – Cedar Forest – Midelt

After breakfast, leave Fes and travel south into the Middle Atlas Mountains. Stop in Ifrane, a clean mountain town known for its alpine-style architecture, before continuing through the cedar forest near Azrou. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but Barbary macaques are sometimes visible in this region.

Continue across changing mountain scenery and agricultural areas toward Midelt. Arriving in the afternoon gives you time to rest instead of continuing directly to the desert after an already long journey.

Approximate distance: 200 kilometres
Estimated driving time: 4–5 hours, excluding stops
Overnight: Midelt
Meals: Breakfast and dinner

Day 4: Midelt – Ziz Valley – Erfoud – Merzouga Desert Camp

Travel across the eastern High Atlas through mountain passes, rocky plateaus and the Ziz Gorge. Stop at a panoramic viewpoint above the Ziz Valley, where a long palm oasis runs between dry mountains and traditional villages.

Continue through Erfoud, known for dates and fossil workshops, before reaching Merzouga beside the Erg Chebbi dunes. In the late afternoon, ride a camel across the sand or choose a 4×4 transfer if you prefer not to ride. Watch the sunset and enjoy dinner and traditional music at your Sahara camp.

Approximate distance: 265 kilometres
Estimated driving time: 4½–5½ hours, excluding stops
Overnight: Merzouga desert camp
Meals: Breakfast and dinner

Day 5: Complete Merzouga Desert Experience

Wake early if you would like to watch the sunrise before breakfast. After leaving the camp, begin a 4×4 exploration around Erg Chebbi rather than immediately departing for the next destination.

The day may include Khamlia village, seasonal desert settlements, panoramic dune viewpoints and a respectful visit with a local family. Lunch can feature medfouna, often described as Berber pizza. Because Imagine Morocco is locally connected to Merzouga, the experience can be adjusted to include tea on a high dune, a short walk, photography or additional time with local hosts.

Optional activities include ATV riding, dune buggies and horse riding. These activities should be booked separately so travelers who prefer a quiet desert day are not required to participate.

Approximate distance: 50–80 kilometres locally
Overnight: Merzouga hotel or desert lodge
Meals: Breakfast and dinner

Day 6: Merzouga – Rissani – Todra Gorge – Dades Valley

Leave Merzouga after breakfast and stop in Rissani when time and market activity allow. This historic town remains an important commercial centre for communities around the Tafilalt region.

Continue west through desert towns and palm-filled valleys toward Tinghir. Walk beneath the high rock walls of Todra Gorge and enjoy lunch nearby before following the road toward Dades Valley. Along the way, the scenery changes from dry plains to unusual rock formations, cultivated fields and old fortified villages.

Approximate distance: 255 kilometres
Estimated driving time: 4½–5 hours, excluding stops
Overnight: Dades Valley
Meals: Breakfast and dinner

Day 7: Dades Valley Hike – Valley of Roses – Skoura - Ouarzazate

After breakfast, travel from Dades Valley toward Ouarzazate through the Valley of Roses and the palm-filled oasis of Skoura.

Two carefully selected optional activities can enrich this journey: a scenic hike through the dramatic Dades Canyon or a hands-on pottery session with a local Amazigh family in Skoura.

Imagine Morocco chose these authentic experiences after years of local expertise and valuable feedback from previous guests. After the activity, continue to Ouarzazate for check-in and an overnight stay.

Approximate distance: 145–165 kilometres
Overnight: Ait Ben Haddou
Meals: Breakfast and dinner

Day 8: Ouarzazate - Ait Ben Haddou – High Atlas – Marrakech

Visit the UNESCO-listed Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou early in the morning. Walk through the fortified village and climb toward the upper viewpoint before many Marrakech day-trip vehicles arrive later in the day.

When road and weather conditions permit, continue through the Ounila Valley toward Telouet. This scenic alternative passes traditional villages and mountain landscapes before joining the main road across the High Atlas. Cross the Tizi n’Tichka route and arrive in Marrakech during the late afternoon or evening.

Approximate distance: 185–200 kilometres
Estimated driving time: 4–5 hours, excluding stops
Overnight: Marrakech
Meals: Breakfast

Day 9: Guided Marrakech Sightseeing Tour

Complete the journey with a guided tour of Marrakech. Possible visits include Bahia Palace, Ben Youssef Madrasa, the old medina, artisan souks and Jemaa el-Fna. The exact order can change according to opening hours and the location of your riad.

After the guided portion, enjoy free time for shopping, a rooftop lunch or a traditional hammam. The tour ends at your Marrakech accommodation, with an optional airport transfer available when required.

Approximate distance: Local sightseeing
Meals: Breakfast

Why Choose a 9-Day Tour Instead of a Shorter Desert Trip?

Shorter Fes-to-Marrakech tours usually concentrate on the road to Merzouga, one desert night and the return journey through Dades Valley. This nine-day itinerary adds time to explore Fes, spend an additional night in the Merzouga region, enjoy local activities and discover Marrakech without making every day feel rushed.

Travellers with less time can compare our 3-day Fes to Marrakech tour,4-day Fes to Marrakech journey and 5-day Fes to Marrakech desert tour.

It is particularly suitable for travellers who want the Sahara experience but also want to understand the cities, landscapes and local culture found along the route.

How Imagine Morocco Designed This Itinerary

This itinerary was developed by the Imagine Morocco team using years of experience, local knowledge and feedback from previous travellers. Many members of our team live in the Merzouga region, allowing us to include authentic desert experiences that are frequently missing from standard Morocco tours.

Instead of adding a complete day in Skoura or a long drive straight to Marrakech, we use the journey from Dades to Ouarzazate more effectively. Travellers can select either a Dades Canyon hike or a pottery lesson with a local Berber family in Skoura. We also recommend visiting Ait Ben Haddou early, before many tourist buses arrive.
