Experience Morocco from north to south on this private 8 Days Tour from Tangier to Marrakech. The journey begins beside the Strait of Gibraltar before continuing through Tetouan, Chefchaouen, the Roman ruins of Volubilis, Meknes, Fes and the Middle Atlas Mountains. You will then spend two memorable nights around the Sahara Desert before crossing Todra Gorge, Dades Valley and the High Atlas Mountains on the way to Marrakech.
This itinerary is part of our collection of Morocco tours from Tangier, designed for travelers arriving by airport, city port or Tanger Med Port. It combines Morocco’s Mediterranean character, imperial history, mountain scenery and Sahara landscapes in eight carefully planned days.
It includes time to explore Chefchaouen without rushing, a complete guided day in Fes and a separate Merzouga adventure day rather than treating the desert as only an overnight stop.
The tour is private and can begin at Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport, Tangier Ville Port, Tanger Med Port or your accommodation in Tangier. Accommodation level, desert activities and daily experiences can all be adjusted to your preferences.

Eight days is the shortest duration we recommend for travelers who want to combine northern Morocco, Fes and the Merzouga desert without completely rushing through every destination.
The route gives Chefchaouen a free afternoon, reserves a full day for Fes and separates the drive to Merzouga from the desert adventure. On Day 5, you sleep near the dunes in a hotel or riad. Day 6 is then dedicated to exploring the desert before you travel by camel or 4×4 to your camp.
If you have less time, compare this itinerary with our 6 Days Tour from Tangier to Marrakech, which follows a faster route through Chefchaouen, Fes and the Sahara.
Travelers looking for an even shorter journey can also explore our 5 Days Tour from Tangier to Marrakech, although it includes less time in the northern cities and Merzouga
This itinerary was prepared with the experience of the Imagine Morocco team, including local team members from the Merzouga region who regularly travel these roads. The distances and longer travel days are clearly explained so that you know what to expect before booking.
Welcome to northern Morocco. Your driver will meet you at Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport, Tangier Ville Port, Tanger Med Port or your accommodation. The sightseeing program will be adjusted to your arrival time.
With an early arrival, begin with a panoramic drive through Tangier’s modern neighborhoods and the coastal area overlooking the meeting point of the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. Continue toward Cap Spartel, one of the most recognizable viewpoints outside the city, followed by a visit to the Caves of Hercules when opening times allow.
Return to central Tangier for a guided walk through the Kasbah and old medina. The narrow streets reveal a mixture of Moroccan, Andalusian and international influences shaped by the city’s long history as a meeting point between Africa and Europe. Depending on your interests, the walk can include the Kasbah Museum area, Grand Socco, the Mendoubia Gardens and small local markets.
Your first day is deliberately flexible. Travelers arriving later will receive a direct transfer and a shorter orientation walk, while those arriving early can enjoy the complete city tour.
Approximate travel: Local sightseeing
Overnight: Tangier
Meals: According to the selected accommodation plan
After breakfast, leave Tangier for Tetouan, a northern Moroccan city known for its strong Andalusian identity. The journey normally takes approximately one hour.
During a short visit, explore the surroundings of the medina, Hassan II Square and the exterior of the Royal Palace. Tetouan feels noticeably different from Morocco’s southern cities. Its white buildings, Spanish architectural influence, and proximity to the Rif Mountains make it an interesting introduction to the north.
Continue through green hills and mountain scenery toward Chefchaouen. We plan an early departure from Tangier so you can arrive around lunchtime or in the early afternoon.
After checking into your riad, the remainder of the day is free. Walk through Chefchaouen at your own pace, beginning around Outa El Hammam Square before entering the blue-painted lanes of the old medina. You can visit the kasbah, browse small craft shops, walk toward Ras El Maa or relax at a rooftop café overlooking the town.
Allowing a free afternoon is especially valuable because Chefchaouen is better enjoyed slowly. It also gives photographers time to explore after many day-trip groups begin leaving.
Already in Fez? and want to visit the blue town? You can still consider our day trips to this city in Fes Day trip collection.
Approximate distance: 120 km
Approximate road time: 2.5 hours, excluding the Tetouan visit
Overnight: Chefchaouen
Meals: Breakfast
Leave Chefchaouen after breakfast and travel south through the Rif countryside. Today, Morocco’s northern mountain landscapes connect to its Roman and imperial history.
Your first main visit is the UNESCO-listed archaeological site of Volubilis. A local site guide can be arranged if you would like a more detailed explanation of the mosaics, public buildings, arches and former houses. Comfortable footwear and sun protection are recommended because most of the visit is outdoors.
Continue to Meknes, one of Morocco’s imperial cities. Depending on restoration work, traffic and the available time, the visit can include the monumental Bab Mansour area, El Hedim Square, the granaries or the mausoleum district. There will also be time for lunch before continuing to Fes.
Arrival in Fes is normally during the late afternoon or early evening. Check into your riad and enjoy a relaxed evening before the following day’s guided medina tour.
This is an active sightseeing day, but the stops divide the drive into manageable sections and provide a clear historical progression from ancient Volubilis to imperial Meknes and medieval Fes.
Approximate distance: 260 km
Approximate road time: About 5 hours, excluding visits and lunch
Overnight: Fes
Meals: Breakfast
Meet your licensed local guide after breakfast for a complete introduction to Fes. The day usually begins outside the old medina with the Royal Palace gates, the historic Jewish quarter and a viewpoint overlooking the city.
Continue to a pottery and mosaic workshop where local craftspeople demonstrate how traditional Fassi ceramics and zellige tiles are made. You will then enter the UNESCO-listed Medina of Fes, one of the world’s largest historic pedestrian urban areas.
Your walking tour leads through narrow streets lined with food sellers, workshops, fountains, schools and historic buildings. Depending on opening hours and your interests, highlights can include Bou Inania Madrasa, the Nejjarine area, the Al-Qarawiyyin complex and the famous tanneries.
Your guide will explain how different crafts and neighborhoods developed inside the medina rather than simply leading you between shops. There will be time for lunch at a local restaurant, followed by further exploration during the afternoon.
The tour involves considerable walking, including uneven streets and stairs. Comfortable shoes are essential. Guests who prefer a slower pace can shorten the walking route while still seeing the most important areas.
Already staying in Fes? Our 3 Days Desert Tour from Fes to Marrakech offers a shorter route through Merzouga, Todra Gorge and Dades Valley.
Approximate travel: Local driving and walking
Overnight: Fes
Meals: Breakfast
Today is one of the longest but most scenic driving days of the tour. Leave Fes early and travel into the Middle Atlas Mountains, where the landscape changes from fertile plains to forests, high plateaus and desert valleys.
Make a short stop in Ifrane, a tidy mountain town known for its alpine-influenced architecture. Continue toward the cedar forest area near Azrou, where Barbary macaques may sometimes be seen. Please observe the animals responsibly and avoid feeding them processed food.
The journey continues through mountain landscapes toward Midelt, where you can stop for lunch. During the afternoon, cross the Tizi n’Talghamt area and travel through the Ziz Gorge. A panoramic stop above the Ziz Valley reveals palm groves extending between arid cliffs and traditional villages.
Pass through Errachidia and Erfoud before reaching Merzouga in the early evening. Unlike itineraries that immediately rush guests onto camels after the long drive, this program allows you to settle into a hotel or desert riad near Erg Chebbi.
Enjoy dinner and rest beside the dunes before your full Merzouga adventure the following day.
Approximate distance: 465 km
Approximate road time: 7.5–8 hours
Expected total day: Approximately 9–10 hours with stops and lunch
Overnight: Hotel or riad in Merzouga
Meals: Breakfast and dinner
After breakfast, begin a 4×4 exploration of the landscapes surrounding the Erg Chebbi dunes. The exact route may change with weather, seasonal conditions and the interests of your group.
Visit desert viewpoints and small settlements before continuing to Khamlia, a village known for its Gnawa musical traditions. Enjoy a live musical performance and learn about the community’s cultural history. If conditions and local availability allow, the route can also include a respectful visit with a nomadic or semi-nomadic family living outside the main villages.
Lunch can be arranged in Merzouga or Khamlia, where you may try medfouna, a stuffed local flatbread sometimes described by travelers as “Berber pizza.” During the hotter part of the afternoon, return to your accommodation for rest or enjoy an optional activity such as quad biking, dune buggies or horse riding.
Later, travel toward your desert camp by camel. The ride is normally timed around sunset and takes approximately 45–90 minutes, depending on the camp’s location. Travelers who do not wish to ride a camel can reach the camp comfortably by 4×4.
After dinner, enjoy local music and the quiet atmosphere of the desert. Clear evenings often provide excellent stargazing, although visibility naturally depends on the weather.
Approximate travel: Local 4×4 desert route
Overnight: Sahara desert camp near Merzouga
Meals: Breakfast and dinner
Included alternative: Camel ride or 4×4 camp transfer
Wake early if you would like to watch the sunrise over the dunes. After breakfast, return from the camp by camel or 4×4 and begin the journey toward Dades Valley.
The first stop can be Rissani, a historic trading town and one of the main commercial centers of the Tafilalt region. When the traditional market is operating, it provides an interesting view of local life away from Morocco’s heavily visited tourist centers.
Continue through Erfoud and desert towns toward Tinghir. From here, enter the palm-filled Todra Valley and travel to Todra Gorge. The canyon is known for its high rock walls and cool riverbed. You will have time to walk through the most impressive section and stop for lunch nearby.
During the afternoon, continue toward Boumalne Dades. The scenery changes again as you enter the Dades Valley, where eroded rock formations, cultivated fields, kasbahs and villages follow the course of the river.
Depending on arrival time and road conditions, stop at panoramic viewpoints overlooking the valley or continue farther into the gorge. Dinner and accommodation are provided at a hotel or kasbah-style guesthouse.
Approximate distance: 270 km
Approximate road time: About 5 hours
Overnight: Dades Valley
Meals: Breakfast and dinner
After breakfast, follow the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs through the Valley of Roses and Kalaat M’Gouna. Rose products are available throughout the year, while the flowering season generally occurs during spring.
Continue past Skoura’s palm groves toward Ouarzazate, a city known for its kasbahs and film studios. A studio visit can be included when requested, although travelers who want to reach Marrakech earlier may prefer to continue directly toward Ait Ben Haddou.
Explore the UNESCO-listed Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, one of Morocco’s best-known examples of traditional earthen architecture. Cross the riverbed or bridge and walk through the fortified village with a local guide. The climb toward the upper viewpoint is optional but provides an impressive view across the surrounding valley.
After lunch, travel into the High Atlas Mountains. The road crosses the Tizi n’Tichka Pass before descending through mountain villages toward Marrakech. Photograph and comfort stops will be made where safe.
Arrival in Marrakech is expected during the late afternoon or early evening. You will be dropped off at your riad, hotel or another agreed location, completing your 8 Days Tour from Tangier to Marrakech.
Because this is a full travel day, we do not recommend booking a flight from Marrakech for the same evening.
Approximate distance: 325 km
Approximate road time: 6–7 hours
Expected total day: Approximately 9–10 hours with Ait Ben Haddou, lunch and stops
Drop-off: Your accommodation in Marrakech
Meals: Breakfast
The price of this private tour depends on:
Private tours generally become more affordable per person when more travelers share the same vehicle. Send Imagine Morocco your dates, group size and preferred accommodation category to receive an exact quotation with no obligation.
Standard packages use clean, comfortable riads, hotels and desert camps with private rooms. This category is suitable for travelers who value local character and good service without requiring luxury facilities.
Mid-range packages offer upgraded riads and hotels, larger rooms and a higher level of comfort. Desert accommodation normally includes a private tent with an ensuite bathroom.
Luxury packages use carefully selected premium riads, hotels, kasbah-style properties and luxury desert camps. Private 4×4 vehicles and further experience upgrades can also be included.
Accommodation names are confirmed before the deposit is paid. If a selected property is unavailable, an equivalent option will be proposed for your approval.
This is a private tour exclusively for your party. You will not share the vehicle with unrelated travelers.
Private transportation allows more flexibility for photographs, lunch stops, departure times and short adjustments along the route. Guided city tours and some desert experiences may involve local hosts or guides, but the principal itinerary remains private.
This tour can operate throughout the year, but spring and autumn generally offer the most comfortable balance of temperatures.
March to May brings pleasant sightseeing weather and greener landscapes in northern Morocco. September to November is also popular, with warm days and generally comfortable desert evenings.
Winter offers clear skies and cooler daytime conditions, although nights in Fes, the mountains and Merzouga can be cold. Summer is possible, but daytime temperatures around Merzouga and the southern valleys can be very high. During hot periods, desert activities are scheduled for the morning and late afternoon.
Bring comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, a refillable water bottle and clothing that can be layered. Even when days are warm, mountain and desert temperatures can fall after sunset.
A small overnight bag is helpful for the desert camp, while your main luggage can remain safely with the vehicle or be transferred according to the camp arrangement. During winter, pack a warm jacket. During summer, lightweight, breathable clothing and strong sun protection are essential.
Imagine Morocco is a local tour company with direct knowledge of the Merzouga region and the roads connecting northern Morocco with the Sahara.
Rather than presenting the desert as a quick camel ride, this itinerary includes a complete Merzouga day with time for local encounters, cultural experiences and optional adventures. We also explain the longer driving days honestly and adapt the journey to your arrival time, mobility and travel style.
Your tour can be discussed by email, WhatsApp or video call before confirmation so you understand the route, accommodations and included services.
