Detailed 4 Day Casablanca to Marrakech Desert Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Casablanca to Fes via Rabat and Meknes

Approximate distance: 300–320 km
Driving time: Around 4 hours without stops
Departure: Usually around 8:30 AM
Overnight: Riad or hotel near the Fes Medina
Included meal: Breakfast

If pickup is from a Casablanca hotel, we normally depart at approximately 8:30 AM. Leaving the busy streets of Casablanca behind, we join the motorway and drive for about one hour to Rabat, Morocco’s capital.

Our first stop is the Kasbah of the Udayas, where guests normally have around 30 minutes to explore and enjoy views over the Bou Regreg River separating Rabat and Salé. We then continue to Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, which contains the tombs of King Mohammed V and King Hassan II.

At around 11:00 AM, the journey continues toward Meknes. The motorway drive takes approximately two hours, with the possibility of a short 15-minute comfort break along the way. Lunch is usually arranged in Meknes before a brief visit to landmarks such as Bab Mansour and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail.

Fes is approximately one hour from Meknes, and arrival is normally in the late afternoon. Your driver will take you as close as possible to your riad or hotel in or near the historic medina.

Travelers wanting a slower itinerary can choose our 6-day Casablanca to Marrakech desert tour.

An alternative for travelers who want more time in Fes

This day can be adapted according to your priorities. Travelers who are particularly interested in Fes can skip the Rabat and Meknes visits and drive directly from Casablanca to Fes, a journey of approximately three hours depending on traffic and the pickup location.

This option leaves enough time for lunch and an afternoon guided tour of the Fes Medina. Alternatively, travelers less interested in an extended Fes visit can follow the Rabat and Meknes route and add the Roman ruins of Volubilis before continuing to Fes.

Driver’s advice: Read the itinerary before booking and decide which experience matters most. Visiting Rabat, Meknes, Volubilis and Fes properly in one day is not realistic. Choosing either the imperial-city stops or a more complete Fes tour creates a better first day.

Day 2: Fes to Merzouga via Ifrane, the Middle Atlas and Ziz Valley

Approximate distance: 460–480 km
Driving time: Approximately 7–8 hours without extended stops
Departure: After breakfast
Overnight: Luxury desert camp near Merzouga
Included meals: Breakfast and dinner

Fes to Merzouga is the longest driving day of this 4 day Casablanca to Marrakech desert tour itinerary. We prefer to explain that clearly rather than present it as a short or effortless transfer.

Although it is a full day on the road, it is also one of Morocco’s most varied drives. The scenery changes so frequently that the journey feels like several different regions connected into one route.

“My name is Houssain, and I am one of Imagine Morocco’s expert drivers. This is one of my favorite roads because the landscape never stays the same for long. We leave the historic medina, cross modern Fes and begin climbing into the Middle Atlas Mountains in less than an hour.”

Consider the 7-day Morocco desert tour for more time in Fes and the Sahara.

Ifrane and the cedar forests

The first important stop is usually Ifrane. Its parks, red-roofed buildings and cooler mountain climate look completely different from the architecture of Fes. We generally allow 20–30 minutes for a drink, a short walk and a photograph beside the town’s well-known stone lion.

Snow is possible in Ifrane during winter. The town is also associated with Morocco’s coldest recorded weather: a temperature of –23.9°C was recorded there in 1935, widely recognized as the lowest temperature recorded in Africa.

From Ifrane, we continue through cedar, pine and oak landscapes toward the forests near Azrou. If Barbary macaques are present, we can stop for approximately 20–30 minutes to observe them.

Imagine Morocco does not encourage guests to feed the macaques. Feeding wildlife changes its natural behavior, creates dependence on visitors and can lead to unsafe encounters.

Across the mountains toward the desert

The forest gradually gives way to open landscapes around Boulaajoul, where we can make a 10–15-minute bathroom and stretching stop. We then continue toward Midelt, between the Middle Atlas and the eastern High Atlas landscapes.

Beyond Midelt, the road follows the Tizi n’Talghomt corridor and passes through the Zaabal Tunnel toward the Drâa-Tafilalet region. Lunch is normally arranged in Er-Rich or Errachidia, depending on timing and dietary requirements. We generally allow 45–60 minutes to eat and rest.

After lunch, the rocky mountain scenery opens onto the Ziz Valley. Thousands of date palms form a long green ribbon between dry slopes and traditional mud-brick settlements. A panoramic stop of approximately 15–20 minutes allows time to appreciate the scale of the valley and take photographs.

The final section passes desert towns and increasingly arid landscapes before reaching Erfoud, the last major town before Merzouga. The first views of the Erg Chebbi dunes signal the end of the day’s road journey.

Depending on arrival time, guests continue to the desert camp by camel or 4×4. After sunset, dinner is served at the camp, followed by traditional music and free time to enjoy the quiet desert sky.

Splitting this drive with an overnight stay in Midelt is possible, but it requires adding another day or removing an important stop elsewhere. On the standard 4 day Casablanca to Marrakech desert tour, we complete the journey in one day so guests can spend the night among the Erg Chebbi dunes.

Day 3: Merzouga to Dades Valley via Rissani and Todra Gorge

Approximate distance: 240–260 km
Driving time: Around 4 hours without stops
Departure: Flexible, normally between 9:00 and 10:00 AM
Arrival: Usually between 5:00 and 6:00 PM
Overnight: Kasbah-style Hotel or riad in the Dades Valley
Included meals: Breakfast and dinner

This is a shorter driving day, so there is no reason to rush directly from Merzouga to Dades. The route passes through Rissani, Erfoud, Jorf, Tinejdad, Todra Valley, Tinghir and Boumalne Dades, with several optional stops that larger group tours sometimes miss.

We normally allow guests more time to enjoy breakfast and the desert before departing between 9:00 and 10:00 AM. This timing also brings us to Rissani after the town begins its working day. Its traditional market is especially active on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, when residents from the surrounding villages arrive to buy groceries, livestock and household goods.

Erfoud is approximately 20 minutes farther along the route. The town is known for fossils found in the surrounding region, and guests interested in geology can visit a local fossil workshop. This stop is optional rather than a compulsory shopping visit.

Another possible stop is the historic khettara irrigation system near Jorf, approximately 30 minutes from Erfoud. These underground channels once transported water across dry landscapes while reducing evaporation. We include the stop only when guests are interested because every traveler has different priorities.

Lunch is usually arranged in Tinejdad between noon and 1:00 PM. Depending on timing and preferences, we can continue and eat closer to the Todra Valley instead.

Todra Valley and gorge

As we approach Tinghir, the dry landscape suddenly opens onto the green Todra Valley. We normally stop at two panoramic viewpoints before descending through the palm groves toward Todra Gorge.

At the gorge, guests have approximately 20–30 minutes for an easy walk beneath the high limestone walls. The accessible section is not a long hike and follows one main path, making it suitable for most visitors.

After leaving the gorge, we pass through Tinghir and continue toward Boumalne Dades. Depending on the location of the accommodation and the remaining daylight, we may continue farther into the valley to see the Monkey Fingers rock formations and the winding Tisdrine road from a panoramic viewpoint.

Dades is a peaceful place to spend the night, with fresher air and a quieter atmosphere than the larger towns along the route.

Driver’s advice: Make the most of this day’s stops. Reaching Dades at 5:00 or 6:00 PM is perfectly reasonable because the purpose of the overnight stay is to rest before the final journey. Arriving earlier is less valuable than taking time to understand the landscapes and communities along the road.

Day 4: Dades Valley to Marrakech via Ouarzazate and the High Atlas

Approximate distance: 310–325 km
Driving time: Approximately 5–6 hours without extended visits
Departure: Between 8:00 and 8:30 AM
Arrival: Around 4:00–5:00 PM with selected stops, or 6:00–7:00 PM with a fuller program
Included meal: Breakfast

The final day follows the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs through the Valley of Roses, Skoura, Ouarzazate and Aït Benhaddou before crossing the High Atlas Mountains to Marrakech.

We advise leaving between 8:00 and 8:30 AM. An early departure helps us reach the main attractions before larger groups arrive and improves the chances of entering Marrakech before the busiest evening traffic.

The first possible stop is in the Valley of Roses. The stop is most rewarding during spring, particularly around late April and early May, when the roses are in bloom. Outside the flowering season, we may continue directly to Skoura.

Choosing the right kasbah experience

At Skoura, guests can visit Kasbah Amridil, a well-preserved kasbah with a quieter and more local atmosphere than Aït Benhaddou. A proper visit takes time, so travelers can choose between exploring Amridil and making only a panoramic stop at Aït Benhaddou, or prioritizing Aït Benhaddou later in the day.

Ouarzazate offers another optional choice: visiting one of the film studios. A guided studio tour can take around two hours and requires an entrance fee, so it is best suited to travelers with a genuine interest in filmmaking. Guests who prefer landscapes and historic architecture can use that time elsewhere and reach Marrakech earlier.

If Kasbah Amridil and the studios are skipped, we continue to Aït Benhaddou for a walking visit. Arriving before lunchtime usually means fewer visitors and a more comfortable climb through the fortified village.

Rather than eating beside the busy kasbah, we often continue into the High Atlas Mountains and stop for lunch along the route. This divides the mountain drive naturally and leaves approximately two hours to Marrakech after the meal, with the possibility of one final panoramic stop near the end of the pass.

Arrival in Marrakech is normally around 4:00 or 5:00 PM when guests select the stops that interest them most. Visiting Amridil, the film studios and Aït Benhaddou on the same day is possible, but arrival may be closer to 6:00 or 7:00 PM.

Driver’s advice: Leaving Dades early provides a quieter experience at the main attractions and helps avoid Marrakech’s heaviest traffic. Arriving with time to check in and rest also creates a better introduction to the city. Guests can settle into their accommodation before exploring Jemaa el-Fnaa and the medina gradually during the evening.
