4-Day Marrakech to Fes Desert Tour via Merzouga

Travel from Marrakech to Fes through the High Atlas Mountains, southern Morocco and the dunes of Erg Chebbi.

This private four-day tour includes Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades Valley, Todra Gorge and two nights around Merzouga. Instead of arriving in the desert at sunset and leaving the following morning immediately, you have an additional day to explore the landscapes and communities our Merzouga team grew up around.

The itinerary remains flexible. We choose vehicles, stops and daily timing according to road conditions, weather and what interests you most.

If you have less time and do not mind longer driving days, compare this itinerary with our 3-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour. Travelers who prefer a slower final journey can choose the 5-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour, which adds a night near Midelt and breaks up the long drive between Merzouga and Fes.

What Makes This Tour Different?

Two Nights Around Merzouga

Most of the Imagine Morocco team comes from Merzouga. The additional desert day allows us to show you more than the standard camel ride and camp experience.

Depending on your interests, you can meet local communities, visit nomadic families, learn to identify fossils in the surrounding mountains, ride ATVs or dune buggies during sunset, ride horses in the desert, or simply spend more time enjoying the dunes.

Stops Chosen for the Day

We do not always use the same crowded panoramic viewpoints. Our drivers choose stops according to visibility, traffic, and road conditions while making sure you experience the important landscapes along the route.

A Flexible Private Itinerary

A family with children may want a different pace from a couple interested in hiking or photography. Because the tour is private, we can adjust walking time, meal stops and activities around your interests.

Four-Day Marrakech to Fes Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas – Ait Ben Haddou – Dades Valley

We collect you from your Marrakech accommodation at approximately 8:00–8:30. This gives you time to eat breakfast before beginning the journey across the mountains.

As we cross the High Atlas, your driver will select panoramic stops based on the day’s weather, light and traffic. We often avoid the busiest roadside stops while ensuring you still see the changing mountain landscapes.

We aim to reach Ait Ben Haddou before the larger groups arrive. A local guide will lead you through the fortified village and explain its earthen architecture, history and continuing connection with local families.

When timing allows, we prefer lunch in Ouarzazate. The city offers a broader choice of restaurants and is often quieter than the lunch stops surrounding Ait Ben Haddou.

Continue through the Valley of Roses to your accommodation in the Dades Valley.

Journey: Approximately 330 kilometres
Accommodation: Dades Valley
Meals: Dinner

Imagine Morocco Insight

We do not select Dades accommodation based only on online photographs. Feedback collected by our drivers and guides helps us choose the strongest options in each category and maintain reliable alternatives when a property is full.

Day 2: Dades Valley – Todra Valley – Khettaras – Merzouga

After breakfast, travel toward Tinghir and the Todra Valley. Along the way, we stop at quieter panoramic points away from the main bus stops.

At Todra Gorge, you can enjoy free time for a gentle walk beneath the cliffs. Travelers interested in hiking can request a walk of approximately one hour, depending on the weather and the day’s schedule.

When daylight and timing permit, we also stop at the khettaras near Jorf. These historic underground channels show how communities transported and managed water in an extremely dry environment.

Lunch is flexible because choices along this road are limited. Your driver will discuss the options with you, including recommended restaurants around Tinjdad and farther along the route. Depending on your preferences, you can choose a local grill, café or riad restaurant. Dietary restrictions can be considered when selecting the stop.

Reach Merzouga in the afternoon and prepare for your camel journey into Erg Chebbi. The ride normally lasts around one hour, sometimes slightly longer depending on the sunset timing and camp location. Guests who find the ride uncomfortable can continue by 4×4.

Dinner and overnight in your selected desert camp.

Journey: Approximately 260 kilometres
Accommodation: Merzouga desert camp
Meals: Breakfast and dinner

Imagine Morocco Insight

Camel rides should not follow a rigid clock. Our team communicates with the camel guides to choose an appropriate departure based on the season, sunset, temperature and your comfort.

Day 3: Experience the Merzouga Our Team Knows

Wake early for an optional sunrise over Erg Chebbi before breakfast at camp.

Today is what distinguishes this four-day itinerary from a rushed desert crossing. Because much of our team grew up in Merzouga, the excursion can go beyond the stops followed by every vehicle.

Depending on your interests and local conditions, we may explore rocky desert landscapes, visit an Amazigh community, meet a nomadic family or search for and identify fossils in the surrounding hills. Family visits are arranged respectfully and depend on the hosts’ availability.

You may also visit Khamlia to learn about its community and musical traditions. For lunch, try medfouna—often called Berber pizza—or choose a local restaurant that suits your tastes and dietary needs.

Optional activities such as an ATV excursion can be arranged. Sunset ATV rides and fossil discoveries are often highlights, while families may prefer sandboarding or a relaxed afternoon near the dunes.

Spend the night in a carefully selected riad within walking distance of Erg Chebbi. The location allows you to return to the sand for a walk, sandboarding or another sunset without needing to drive.

Journey: Local desert exploration
Accommodation: Dune-side riad in Merzouga
Meals: Breakfast and dinner

Imagine Morocco Insight

The desert is not only sand. Our local team can explain the fossils, seasonal changes, communities and practical knowledge that shaped life around Merzouga. These are details learned through growing up here rather than memorized from a standard itinerary.

Day 4: Merzouga – Ziz Valley – Middle Atlas – Ifrane – Fes

Leave Merzouga early after breakfast. Although this is the longest driving day, it is also one of our favorite routes because the landscape changes repeatedly.

The morning begins with the desert around Merzouga before reaching the palm-filled Ziz Valley. Continue through mountain plateaus toward Midelt, where lunch may be arranged in town or just outside it, depending on timing and the restaurant choices available that day.

After lunch, the dry mountain scenery gradually gives way to the greener landscapes and cedar forests of the Middle Atlas. Stop in the forest to observe Barbary macaques before continuing to Ifrane for a short break.

Ifrane’s architecture and mountain atmosphere feel very different from the other towns visited during the tour. From here, continue to Fes and finish near the historic medina.

Arrival is generally around 17:00–18:00. Because this is a private tour, the precise time depends on how long you choose to spend at each stop.

Journey: Approximately 470 kilometres
Meals: Breakfast
Arrival: Fes

Imagine Morocco Insight

We use several possible lunch stops around Midelt instead of taking every group to the same restaurant. This gives travelers more choice and helps break up the journey naturally.

Customize Your Marrakech to Fes Tour

The itinerary can be adapted to your interests. You can add or remove a day, change an overnight location, include an activity or skip an experience that does not suit you.

Not sure which itinerary fits your travel dates? Explore our complete selection of private tours from Marrakech, including one-way desert journeys, Marrakech round trips and longer Morocco itineraries.

For Travelers Interested in Dades Hiking

Add a night in the Dades Valley for a longer hike. Alternatively, hike in the morning and use a shorter route toward Merzouga later that day.

For Travelers Interested in Todra Hiking

Spend the first night in Tinghir instead of Dades. This allows you to start hiking early, when the valley is quieter and temperatures are usually more comfortable.

Morning walkers often notice the clean mountain air and the breeze passing through the valley’s fig and peach trees—small sensory details that are easily missed during a short roadside stop.

For Families

We can reduce walking, select child-friendly stops and recommend activities that suit the children’s ages.

For Couples

The itinerary can include more private time around the dunes, a sunset activity or an upgraded desert camp.

For Photographers

Departure times and stops can be adjusted around morning and evening light, subject to the overall driving schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is four days enough to travel from Marrakech to Fes through the desert?

Four days provide a good balance for travelers who want to include the Sahara while moving between Marrakech and Fes. You will still have a long drive on the final day, but the additional night near Merzouga makes the desert section much less rushed than a shorter itinerary.

Is this a private or shared tour?

This itinerary is designed as a private tour. Your vehicle is reserved for your group, allowing more flexibility with stops and departure times.

Do I have to ride a camel?

No. Travelers who prefer not to ride can reach the desert camp by 4×4. Please tell us in advance so we can arrange the transfer.

What happens to our luggage during the camel trek?

Your main luggage is transported to the camp separately or stored securely in the support vehicle. You only need to carry a small bag for the hour of camel trekking and then you will find all of your luggage in the camp.

Does the desert camp have private bathrooms?

That depends on the camp category selected. Luxury tents generally have private bathrooms, while standard camps may use shared facilities. We will explain the available options before confirming your booking.

Can vegetarian or vegan meals be arranged?

Yes. Vegetarian and vegan meals can be requested. Please inform us about dietary requirements and allergies when booking.

How cold does the Sahara get at night?

Desert nights can become cold, particularly from late autumn through early spring. Warm layers are recommended even when daytime temperatures are comfortable.

What time will we arrive in Fes?

Arrival is normally expected in the early evening. The exact time depends on traffic, weather, lunch duration and the number of stops made during the journey.

Can this itinerary operate in reverse from Fes to Marrakech?

Yes. A reverse Fes-to-Marrakech itinerary can be arranged, although the order and timing of certain experiences may change.

Starting in Fes instead? Follow the route in the opposite direction on our 4-day Fes to Marrakech desert tour, including Merzouga, Todra Gorge, Dades Valley and Ait Ben Haddou.

Is the tour suitable for children?

Families can take this tour, but parents should consider the long driving distances, especially on the final day. Child seats should be requested before arrival.

Can the itinerary be customized?

Yes. Accommodation category, camp style, room arrangements and additional nights can be adapted to your travel plans.
