6 Day Desert Tour from Marrakech to Merzouga Overview

Experience the landscapes, culture and remote desert routes of southern Morocco on this 6 day desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga. The private journey crosses the High Atlas Mountains, visits the fortified village of Ait Ben Haddou, follows the palm-filled Draa Valley and continues through Mharech, Ramlia and Ouzina before reaching the Erg Chebbi dunes.

Unlike shorter Marrakech desert tours, this six-day itinerary gives you time to explore the Sahara without rushing. Detailed 6 Day Desert Tour from Marrakech Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas Mountains – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate

Your private driver will collect you from your hotel or riad at approximately 8:30 AM. Leaving Marrakech, the journey climbs into the High Atlas Mountains along the Tizi n’Tichka road. There will be stops at panoramic viewpoints and mountain villages, allowing you to enjoy the changing scenery and take photographs.

Continue to Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified earthen village and an official UNESCO World Heritage Site. A guided walk takes you through its narrow passages and traditional buildings while introducing you to the history of the caravan trade and southern Moroccan architecture. Travelers with limited time can also visit the kasbah on our Ait Ben Haddou day trip from Marrakech.

After lunch, continue to Ouarzazate, where you may visit Taourirt Kasbah or stop outside the famous film studios.

Dinner and overnight in Ouarzazate.

Day 2: Ouarzazate – Agdez – Draa Valley – Nkob – Mharech Gorge

After breakfast, travel across the Anti-Atlas Mountains and Tizi n’Tinifift Pass toward Agdez. From here, the route follows the Draa Valley, known for its palm groves, mud-brick villages and historic kasbahs. This region is part of the varied southern Moroccan landscape promoted by the official Moroccan National Tourist Office.

Continue through Nkob, where you can stop for lunch and admire its traditional kasbah architecture. In the afternoon, leave the busier roads and travel toward Mharech Gorge. The scenery becomes increasingly remote, with rocky plateaus, dry riverbeds and isolated Amazigh settlements.

Dinner and overnight in a local guesthouse near Mharech.

Day 3: Mharech Gorge – Ramlia Oasis – Ouzina Dunes – Merzouga

Today is one of the most adventurous parts of your 6 days Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour. Travel by 4×4 along remote tracks formerly associated with desert rally routes. Pass desert plateaus and seasonal riverbeds before reaching the small village and oasis of Ramlia.

Continue toward the dunes of Ouzina, an isolated area visited by far fewer travelers than Merzouga. Depending on the season and road conditions, you may stop for tea with a local family or enjoy a traditional Berber pizza for lunch.

In the afternoon, arrive at the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga. Leave the vehicle and ride a camel into the dunes, stopping to watch the sunset. At the desert camp, enjoy dinner, Amazigh music and a clear view of the night sky.

Overnight in a private desert tent.

Day 4: Merzouga Desert Tour – Nomadic Families – Khamlia – Erg Chebbi

Wake early to watch the sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes before breakfast at the camp. You may return from the camp by camel or choose a comfortable 4×4 transfer.

The day continues with a tour around the Merzouga region. Visit a nomadic family to learn about life in the desert and share mint tea without treating the encounter as a rushed photo stop. Continue to Khamlia, a village known for its Gnawa musical traditions, where you can listen to a live performance.

After lunch, enjoy free time at your hotel or choose an optional quad-bike or buggy excursion. You can return to the dunes for another sunset before dinner and overnight in a hotel or riad near Merzouga.

Day 5: Merzouga – Rissani – Erfoud – Todra Gorge – Dades Valley

After breakfast, depart Merzouga for Rissani, historically an important trading centre in the Tafilalet region. When the traditional market is operating, you can walk through its food, spice, craft and livestock sections with your driver or a local guide.

Continue through Erfoud, an area known for fossils and date production, before travelling toward Tinghir and Todra Gorge. Take a short walk beneath the gorge’s high rock walls and, when time allows, visit part of the palm oasis.

In the afternoon, continue to Boumalne Dades. Drive through the Dades Valley to see its unusual rock formations, kasbahs and winding mountain road.

Dinner and overnight in a kasbah-style hotel overlooking the valley.

Day 6: Dades Valley – Valley of Roses – Skoura – Marrakech

The final day of your 6 day desert tour from Marrakech begins with a relaxed drive through the Dades Valley. Continue toward Kalaat M’Gouna and the Valley of Roses, an agricultural region known for producing rosewater and other locally made products.

Travel onward to Skoura, where palm groves surround historic earthen kasbahs. Depending on timing, you can visit Kasbah Amridil before stopping for lunch near Ouarzazate.

The journey then crosses the High Atlas Mountains and returns to Marrakech. Arrival is normally in the late afternoon or early evening, although the exact time depends on traffic, weather and the number of stops.

Your driver will drop you off at your hotel, riad or another agreed location.

Price and Accommodation

The price of your 6-day desert tour from Marrakech is determined by the accommodation category you select: standard, mid-range or luxury. Each category offers a different level of comfort and service, so the final price will depend on your choice, travel dates, room type and number of travellers. Here is the difference between each accommodation category:

Standard Accommodation

The standard option uses clean, locally owned guesthouses and a traditional desert camp. Facilities are simpler, and bathroom arrangements at the camp should be confirmed before booking.

Mid-Range Accommodation

The mid-range option includes comfortable kasbah-style hotels, private en-suite rooms and an upgraded desert tent with better bedding and bathroom facilities.

Luxury Accommodation

The luxury option uses higher-category boutique hotels and a spacious luxury desert tent with a private bathroom. Because accommodation around Mharech is limited, the precise level of luxury depends on availability.
