Merzouga Desert Tour from Marrakech Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas Mountains – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Dades Valley

Your 3 days desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga and back begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel, riad, or the nearest accessible meeting point in Marrakech. We leave the busy streets of the city and drive toward the High Atlas Mountains.

The road climbs through beautiful Berber villages and mountain landscapes before reaching the famous Tizi n’Tichka Pass. Along the way, we stop for panoramic views, photos, coffee, and fresh mountain air.

Our first major visit is Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, one of Morocco’s most iconic fortified villages. This ancient ksar is known for its traditional earthen architecture and has been recognized by UNESCO for its cultural value. You will have time to walk through the narrow lanes, cross the river area, climb to the viewpoint, and learn about the history of this important stop on old caravan routes.

After lunch near Ait Ben Haddou, we continue to Ouarzazate, often called the gateway to the desert. Depending on time, we may stop for photos near Taourirt Kasbah or the famous film studios before continuing through the palm groves, kasbah landscapes, and desert valleys.

In the evening, we arrive in Dades Valley or Tinghir, where you will enjoy dinner and spend the night in a comfortable hotel or guesthouse.

Day 1 driving route: Marrakech → Tizi n’Tichka → Ait Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate → Dades Valley
Overnight: Hotel or riad in Dades Valley or Tinghir
Meals included: Dinner
Main experiences: Atlas Mountains, Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, Dades Valley

Day 2: Dades Valley – Todra Gorge – Erfoud – Merzouga Desert – Camel Trek – Sahara Camp

After breakfast, the journey continues through the spectacular landscapes of southern Morocco. We drive through the Dades Valley, famous for its rock formations, palm groves, and kasbah scenery.

Next, we visit Todra Gorge, one of the most impressive canyon landscapes in Morocco. You will have time to walk between the high rock walls, take photos, and enjoy the cooler air of the gorge. Several travel guides describe Todra Gorge as a key stop on the route from Marrakech to Merzouga, and many of our Marrakech Tours include it before continuing to the Sahara.

After visiting the gorge, we continue toward Erfoud, a town known for fossils and dates, before reaching Merzouga, the gateway to the Erg Chebbi dunes.

When you arrive near the dunes, your camel caravan will be waiting. Ride across the orange sand as the sun begins to set over the Sahara. This is one of the most unforgettable moments of the tour.

If you prefer not to ride a camel, a 4×4 transfer to the camp can be arranged. This is important for families, older travelers, or guests who want a more comfortable option.

At the desert camp, you will be welcomed with tea, dinner, and Berber music under the stars. Spend the night in a private tent in the heart of the Sahara atmosphere.

Day 2 driving route: Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Erfoud → Merzouga → Erg Chebbi camp
Overnight: Sahara desert camp in Merzouga
Meals included: Breakfast and dinner
Main experiences: Todra Gorge, Merzouga, camel trek, sunset, desert camp, Berber music

Day 3: Merzouga Sunrise – Ouarzazate – High Atlas Mountains – Marrakech

Wake up early to watch the sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes. The morning light changes the color of the sand from soft gold to deep orange, making this one of the best photo moments of the entire trip.

After sunrise, enjoy breakfast at the camp. You will then return by camel or 4×4 to meet your driver and begin the journey back to Marrakech.

Day 3 is the longest driving day, but it is also a beautiful road trip through desert plains, valleys, kasbahs, and mountain scenery. We stop along the way for lunch, coffee, photos, and rest breaks.

The main stops are for panoramic views in the Anti-Atlas Mountains, precisely in the town of Agdez. Moreover, you will enjoy the drive and stops on top of the Ait Saouen Mountain pass.

The route passes back through Ouarzazate and across the High Atlas Mountains before arriving in Marrakech in the evening. Drop-off is at your hotel, riad, or the nearest accessible point in the medina.

Day 3 driving route: Merzouga → Alnif/Nkob or Ouarzazate route → High Atlas Mountains → Marrakech
Meals included: Breakfast
Main experiences: Sahara sunrise, desert landscapes, Atlas Mountains, return to Marrakech
Arrival in Marrakech: Usually evening, depending on traffic, weather, and stops

Why choose this 3 days desert tour from Marrakech?

This tour is designed for travelers who want more than a quick desert photo stop. In three days, you experience the full contrast of Morocco: Marrakech, the High Atlas Mountains, UNESCO heritage, kasbahs, valleys, gorges, palm oases, camel trekking, and a real Sahara camp.

The route includes the classic highlights that travelers expect from a Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour, but with clearer planning, honest timing, flexible camp options, and practical details that help you book with confidence.

Standard camp vs luxury camp

Standard desert camp:

Private tent, shared bathroom facilities, dinner, breakfast, music, and camel trek.

Luxury desert camp:

Private tent with private bathroom, upgraded bedding, more comfort, dinner, breakfast, music, and camel trek.

Which Desert Camp Should You Choose?

Choose a standard desert camp if you want a simple and budget-friendly Sahara experience with basic comfort, shared facilities, and a traditional atmosphere.

Choose a luxury desert camp if you want more comfort, private bathroom, better bedding, nicer tents, and a more relaxed stay after the long drive.

For most travelers, the luxury camp is the better choice because the Sahara night is one of the highlights of the tour, and the extra comfort makes the experience more special.

Best Time to Take a 3 Days Desert Tour from Marrakech

The best months for a comfortable Sahara desert tour are generally spring and autumn, when the weather is more pleasant for driving, walking, camel riding, and sleeping in the desert. Winter can be beautiful, but nights in the desert can be cold. Summer can be very hot, especially around Merzouga, so guests should prepare with sun protection, water, and light breathable clothing.

Before packing, you can check the latest Merzouga weather forecast, especially in winter and summer.

What to pack for the 3 days Sahara tour from Marrakech

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Hat or scarf for sun and sand
  • Warm jacket for winter nights
  • Small overnight bag for the desert camp
  • Camera or phone charger
  • Cash for lunches, drinks, tips, and optional activities
  • Personal medication
  • Motion sickness tablets if mountain roads affect you

Important Things to Know Before Booking

1-Important note about driving time:

This tour covers a long distance because the real Sahara dunes of Erg Chebbi are far from Marrakech. The drive is part of the experience, with changing landscapes, mountain passes, villages, valleys, and desert roads. Guests who want a slower pace should consider a 4-day tour with an extra night in the desert.

If you prefer to finish in Fes instead of returning to Marrakech, you can choose our 3 days desert tour from Marrakech to Fes.

2-Luggage advice:

You can bring your main luggage on the tour. For the desert camp night, it is easier to prepare a small overnight bag with your essentials. Larger luggage can usually stay in the vehicle or be transferred separately depending on the camp arrangement.

3-Camel Ride or 4×4 Transfer to Camp:

Choose the camel ride if you want the classic Sahara experience, sunset photos, and a slower journey across the dunes.

Choose the 4×4 transfer if you prefer comfort, have mobility issues, travel with small children, or do not want to ride a camel.

Most travelers choose the camel ride one way and return by 4×4 for the best balance.

4-Pickup from Marrakech Medina Riads:

Pickup from Marrakech Medina riads is included. Since many riads are located inside narrow streets where cars cannot enter, your driver will usually meet you at the closest accessible point to your accommodation.

This could be a nearby square, main gate, parking area, or another easy meeting point in the Medina. We will confirm the exact pickup location with you before the tour starts.
